Orchidaceae

Ophrys fuciflora

(=O. holosericea)
Late Spider Orchid

Vaud, Switzerland - May 2014

The Late Spider Orchid grows in short grasslands throughout central and southern Europe. It also occurs in Britain but is very rare and there are currently (2014) estimated to be only 400-500 plants surviving in around 20 sites in Kent.

Confusingly, this plant is named as O. holosericea in both Flora Helvetica (the definitive Swiss wildflower fieldguide) and Flora Alpina (an atlas of the wildflowers of the Alps).
